Liberal food caucus in Moncton today

The purpose of the mission is to draft a comprehensive food policy intended to ensure that Canada's food sources are accessible, affordable and safe.

"We want to listen to Canadians' suggestions on the essential ingredients of a comprehensive food policy," said Liberal Food Caucus Chairman Dr. Kirsty Duncan, MP for Etobicoke North.

"Besides having access to high-quality and affordable food, Canadians wants to be ensured our food supply is environmentally sustainable, health-promoting and is producer-and consumer-focused. This is such a big issue that we welcome thoughts from all Canadians," she said.

The food caucus is touring Eastern Canada with stops made in St. John's and Halifax before travelling to Moncton and will proceed to Charlottetown tomorrow. Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe MP Brian Murphy is participating.

The group conducted its Western Canada tour two weeks ago.

"Food is an issue that crosses all jurisdictions and many government departments including agriculture, fisheries, industry, environment, health, transportation, CIDA, and international trade," said Liberal Health Critic Dr. Carolyn Bennett. "It is time that we had a truly comprehensive food policy for Canada."

Liberal Agriculture Critic Wayne Easter said the tour also offers rural and urban MPs an opportunity to understand how food gets from the fields to the table.
